Acacia Pharma is a pharmaceutical company focused on hospital-based supportive care and with a lower risk product discovery & development capability. Management believes Acacia is uniquely positioned to create a successful company within an area of substantial growth, using a cash efficient, rapid proof-of-principle, business model.
Supportive care is the management of the symptoms of a disease or condition, and the side-effects of the treatments of that disease or condition. Acacia primarily focuses on cancer supportive care, an area which is considered to have come of age.
Oncologists have recognised the need to treat patients with supportive care therapies to allow them to receive maximal doses of their chemotherapy and to increase their quality of life. This recent change of perspective partly reflects the increasingly chronic nature of cancer therapy. This is due to new, more effective anticancer therapies, as well as increasing demands from patients and their carers for improved quality, as well as quantity, of life. In addition, some of the new anti-cancer agents, which are increasingly used, have specific side effect profiles which represent a challenge to physicians.
Acacia discovers and develops supportive care product opportunities with a high probability of success, based on established drugs specifically through new uses for established drugs, optimised drug delivery presentations or optimised enantiomer products. This approach allows Acacia to capitalise on publicly available information, thereby lowering development risk, time and cost compared to new chemical or molecular entities, whilst delivering products of high value in areas of unmet need.
Acacia has established a commercially-led drug discovery & development process. It prioritises its discovery & development activities by assessing the results of market research, the Company’s ability to identify a product that meets the target product profile needed by physicians, and the product’s perceived development path. Acacia then seeks an established drug having the pharmacological target profile it has defined. Products are protected through patents covering the new use and/or the optimal delivery system and enantiomer profile. Acacia aims to retain product commercialisation rights, enabling it to deliver maximum value from its assets.
Acacia operates a virtual business model. It has an experienced management team, members of which have successfully conceived, managed and exited similar businesses. The team has extensive expertise in all areas considered core to the business and is complemented by a network of industry consultants.
